Gaining access to Arizona’s world famous Wave

“The Wave” is an ancient sandstone rock formation near the Arizona-Utah border that is so famous that legend says you must photograph it before you can call yourself a bona fide landscape photographer. The high season for photographing the natural creation begins next month, but if you’re thinking about visiting The Wave-even if all you want to do is look at it-don’t move so fast. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management issues only 20 permits per day.

They issue 10 of these permits via an online lottery system, and 10 are handed out via an on-site lottery conducted the day before you hope to see the popular landmark. Depending on the time of year, there can be dozens of people-even more than 100-hoping to get a permit.
